Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has urged public sector banks (PSBs) to rethink how they engage with young Indian customers, saying they must adapt to a generation raised on smartphones, UPI and on-demand digital services. Speaking at PSB Confluence 2026 in New Delhi, Sitharaman said young customers want banking services that are simple, intuitive, personalised and available 24/7. She recalled an interaction with people under 25, many of whom named private banks when asked where they held accounts, while describing PSBs as “not cool”.
