MariBank Expands Regional Presence from Singapore Amid Growing Digital Banking Landscape in Asia

One in three Singaporean business owners still use personal bank accounts for company banking needs to avoid high transaction fees, per a MariBank survey. This practice leads to tax and legal complexities during tax season. MariBank, a digital bank under Southeast Asian tech firm Sea, aims to address underserved banking needs with a zero transaction fee business account and a unified app for personal and business banking. MariBank's CEO Natalia Goh believes these unmet needs present opportunities for the bank. MariBank, established in 2023 as a Sea subsidiary, sees itself as an extension of Sea's e-commerce and financial payments platforms. Goh highlights the synergies between MariBank and Sea's existing businesses, emphasizing the seamless integration of banking services into users' digital experiences. MariBank is one of several digital banks in Singapore established after the issuance of digital banking licenses in 2019. Despite the potential of digital banking, profitability remains a challenge for many players. Among Singaporean digital banks targeting retail consumers, only Trust Bank has achieved profitability. MariBank Singapore reported a loss of 55.6 million Singapore dollars in 2025, while fellow digital bank GXS posted a 208 million Singapore dollar loss. Both banks are focused on proving their profitability within a specified timeline, with MariBank receiving a capital injection from Sea to support its growth. MariBank and GXS are expanding into less-banked markets like Malaysia and the Philippines. MariBank's Philippines venture involves tailoring products to local preferences and addressing the country's reliance on physical cash. The bank is piloting cash-in, cash-out services with retail partners to cater to the market's payment habits. Goh is optimistic about MariBank's prospects in the Philippines, leveraging Sea's brand recognition to drive adoption. In the Philippines, MariBank is utilizing Sea's data to underwrite loans in a market with limited credit history. Goh envisions building a regional digital banking group headquartered in Singapore, leveraging the city-state's advanced banking ecosystem for innovation and strategic growth. MariBank's goal remains focused on simplifying and enhancing the banking experience for customers, with an eye on future expansion. Goh's vision for MariBank underscores a commitment to customer-centric banking solutions that prioritize simplicity, reliability, and value. The bank's regional expansion strategy aligns with the evolving digital banking landscape in Asia, positioning MariBank as a key player in the sector's growth.
