Accelerated Relative Strength Breakout
Family: trend_following · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: Equities, Crypto, FX, Indices · Timeframes: H4, D1
Thesis
Assets that demonstrate superior relative performance over 1-3 months tend to attract institutional flow, creating a 'momentum' effect. By entering only when the rate of change of this momentum (DOsMA) is accelerating and price breaks structural highs (Donchian), we capture the 'meat' of the trend while using volatility-based stops to survive noise.
Components
- Performance Table (regime) — Identifies 'hot' assets by ensuring the target symbol is in a sustained positive performance regime relative to a basket of assets.
- Difference of OsMA (DOsMA) (direction) — Filters for accelerating momentum (positive first derivative of the Oscillator of Moving Average) to avoid entering exhausted trends.
- Donchian Channels (entry) — Provides the execution trigger via price breakouts of the N-period high/low, signifying a shift in market structure.
- TopTrend (BBands Stop) (exit) — Acts as a trailing profit-protection mechanism that reacts to volatility expansions/contractions using Bollinger Band logic.
- SuperTrend MT5 (FxGeek) (risk) — Used exclusively for initial stop-loss placement and volatility-adjusted position sizing to normalize risk across varying market conditions.
Known failure conditions
- Prolonged period of 'mean reversion' where breakout signals immediately result in 'bull traps' or 'bear traps'.
- The asset shows high multi-month performance but DOsMA remains negative, indicating a massive momentum divergence.
- Performance Table symbols become highly correlated (e.g., 0.9+), removing the benefit of the regime filter.
