Darvas Momentum Sweep Hybrid
Family: breakout · Regime: trending · Complexity: high · Asset classes: FX, Equities, Indices · Timeframes: H1, H4
Thesis
Market trends often accelerate after a period of consolidation is broken and a liquidity 'sweep' has occurred to clear out weak hands. By using Darvas Boxes to define the range and Absolute Strength (ASH) to confirm the surge, we can enter high-probability trends while using institutional liquidity levels (Daily Sweep) for robust risk management. The ZigZag exit ensures we stay in the trend until a structural reversal is confirmed.
Components
- Darvas Boxes MetaTrader 5 (regime) — Defines the structural regime by identifying consolidation boundaries; only trading breakouts or trends outside the box.
- MACD Demo Implementation (direction) — Ensures the breakout is supported by medium-term momentum alignment between fast and slow EMAs.
- Absolute Strength Histogram (ASH) (entry) — Acts as the precision trigger by measuring the immediate strength of bulls vs bears.
- ZigZag Color (Classic) (exit) — Provides a structural exit signal when the current swing trend physically reverses.
- The Daily Sweep (risk) — Identifies institutional liquidity levels for stop-loss placement and ensures trades align with daily bias.
- Commodity Channel Index (CCI) (confirmation) — Filters out low-velocity breakouts by requiring price to be significantly deviant from its mean.
Known failure conditions
- Average True Range (ATR) falls below 20-day median, rendering Darvas Boxes prone to micro-whipsaws.
- Successive ZigZag swing highs/lows narrowing (forming a wedge) which invalidates the breakout thesis.
- Multiple ASH trigger failures within the same Darvas Box range.
