Darvas-Wave Velocity Breakout System
Family: breakout · Regime: trending · Complexity: high · Asset classes: FX, EQUITIES, CRYPTO · Timeframes: H1, H4, D1
Thesis
Market breakouts from Darvas-defined consolidation zones are most reliable when confirmed by price velocity (MOM) and momentum (CCI), but their probability of success diminishes significantly when the breakout occurs during a terminal Elliott Wave 5 exhaustion phase. By filtering for volatility using screen-scale grid utilities, we can identify 'tradable' breakouts that have sufficient room to move before hitting structural cycle exhaustion.
Components
- Grid Utility (Rosasurfer Framework) (regime) — Acts as a volatility regime filter. If GridSize is expanding beyond its median, it indicates high-volatility expansion; if too small, market is in a 'dead' zone.
- Commodity Channel Index (CCI) (direction) — Establishes the directional momentum bias. Values above +100 confirm bullish intent; below -100 confirm bearish intent.
- Darvas Boxes Modern/Classic (entry) — Provides the mechanical entry trigger based on price breaking out of confirmed consolidation ranges.
- Qualitative Quantitative Estimation (QQE) (exit) — Provides a trailing volatility-adjusted exit to capture the meat of the trend while exiting during momentum decay.
- Elliott Wave [LuxAlgo] (risk) — Identifies cycle exhaustion (Wave 5) to filter out late entries and provides structural pivots (Wave 2/4) for stop-loss placement.
- Momentum (MOM) (confirmation) — Validates the breakout by ensuring price velocity is increasing at the moment of the Darvas breach.
Known failure conditions
- Market enters a high-frequency 'ping-pong' regime where Darvas boxes are repeatedly triggered and failed within the ATR range.
- The external DLL dependencies of the Grid Utility fail to return valid chart height data, leading to incorrect regime scaling.
- Wave 5 identification consistently fails to label cycle tops in hyper-trending parabolic markets.
