Thesis
Institutional traders seek to fill orders at or near the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) to minimize market impact. When a market is in an 'efficient' trend (high price movement relative to volume, as measured by EOM) and 'calm' (low frequency of SMA crosses), pullbacks to the VWAP represent high-probability re-entry points where momentum (MACD/QQE) is likely to resume the primary trend. The edge lies in distinguishing between a 'noisy' range-bound market and an orderly institutional trend.
Components
- Ease of Movement (EOM) (regime) — Acts as a regime filter to ensure price is moving efficiently; we seek 'low-friction' moves where price advances without requiring extreme volume surges, indicating lack of resistance.
- Qualitative Quantitative Estimation (QQE) (direction) — Provides the primary momentum bias. By using a smoothed RSI and volatility bands, it filters out noise and establishes the directional 'permission' for trade entry.
- VWAP + EMA Cross Pullback (entry) — Identifies the specific entry trigger. It targets institutional 'discount' entries where price reverts to the volume-weighted average within an established EMA trend.
- TopTrend (BBands Stop) (exit) — Serves as the trend-following exit. It uses volatility-adjusted bands to define the 'envelope' of the trend, closing the position when the trend structure breaks.
- Chandelier Exit (risk) — Provides a hard volatility-based stop loss and basis for position sizing. It anchors the risk to the highest high (for longs) to prevent premature exits during normal volatility.
- MACD (confirmation) — Confirms the immediate momentum shift during the VWAP pullback. We require the histogram to be moving in our favor to avoid 'catching a falling knife'.
- Market Weather Price MA Cross (volatility_filter) — Excludes 'turbulent' market conditions. High cross-counts suggest a mean-reverting or ranging environment where VWAP pullbacks are likely to fail.
Known failure conditions
- The strategy fails if the 'Market Weather' indicator consistently reports low turbulence (stable trend) while the price remains in a tight, non-trending range.
- Invalidated if volume data is not reliable, as VWAP and EOM rely heavily on accurate volume-price correlation.
