Fractal REI Momentum Cluster
Family: trend_following · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: Equities, Forex, Crypto · Timeframes: H1, H4
Thesis
Trends often begin with a burst of velocity that escapes a 'chaos' range (Fractal Chaos Bands). By filtering this velocity through Tom DeMark's REI (which zeroes out non-trending movement) and confirming the trend with Heikin-Ashi smoothing, we can identify high-probability momentum clusters. Using Daily MTF levels for risk ensures the trade is protected by structural 'failure points' that institutional traders monitor.
Components
- Heikin-Ashi Candles (regime) — Filters out noise to identify the core trend regime; provides a smoother baseline for directional bias than standard OHLC candles.
- Supported indicator max boxes count (direction) — Used here as a 'clean' price plot to compare against the synthetic Heikin-Ashi values, ensuring the real price is leading the smoothed average.
- Range Expansion Index (REI) (entry) — Identifies momentum velocity and filters out non-trending price action using DeMark's logic; provides the specific entry trigger.
- Donchian Channels (exit) — Acts as a trailing exit mechanism based on multi-bar market structure (Turtle-style exit).
- Daily High Low MTF (risk) — Provides hard support/resistance levels based on higher timeframe price action for stop-loss placement.
- Fractal Chaos Bands (FCB) (volatility_filter) — Sets a volatility threshold; price must break out of the chaos range to validate the REI momentum signal.
Known failure conditions
- Persistent sideways price action within the Daily High/Low range leading to stop-outs.
- REI failing to reach +/- 60 thresholds during a slow-grind trend.
- High volatility news events that trigger the Donchian exit prematurely before the daily trend develops.
