Grid-Filtered Structural Breakout
Family: breakout · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: Forex, Indices, Large-cap Equities · Timeframes: H1, H4
Thesis
The strategy assumes that high-probability trend moves occur when price breaks out of a daily structure (Daily High/Low) with volume-weighted momentum (Force Index) and sufficient trend strength (ADX), provided it has already escaped its short-term mean-reversion zone (Grid Bot Base). The edge lies in filtering 'traps' within the grid bands.
Components
- Grid Bot [Grid range plugin] Two Moving Avarages [psyll] (regime) — Defines the 'central value' (Base) and statistical extremes. Entries only occur when price escapes the central mean, indicating a potential regime shift from range to trend.
- Force Index (NNFX Variant) (direction) — Ensures that the price movement is backed by volume/tick activity, filtering out low-liquidity spikes that lack institutional following.
- Daily High Low MTF (entry) — Provides objective market structure levels. A break of the previous day's extreme is a classic catalyst for intraday momentum.
- Donchian Channels (DC) (exit) — Acts as a volatility-adjusted trailing stop. Exiting at the opposite channel extreme captures the meat of a trend while allowing for minor pullbacks.
- Average True Range (ATR) (risk) — Provides the basis for dynamic position sizing and initial stop-loss placement to ensure risk is normalized against current market volatility.
- Hull Moving Average (HMA) (confirmation) — Filters out short-term noise; its slope acts as a fast-reacting trend confirmation to ensure the entry isn't against immediate momentum.
- Average Directional Index (volatility_filter) — Filters out low-volatility periods where the Force Index and DHL breakouts are prone to whipsaws. Only allows trades when trend strength is sufficient.
Known failure conditions
- Prolonged low-volatility environments where ADX remains below 20 for multiple weeks.
- Price frequently piercing Daily High/Lows but immediately returning to the Grid Bot Base (Mean Reversion dominance).
- Significant discrepancies between Tick Volume (Forex) and actual traded volume in underlying assets.
