Heiken-Fractal Structural Momentum Strategy
Family: breakout · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: FX, Equities, Crypto · Timeframes: H1, H4, D1
Thesis
Structural breakouts (Fractals) are more reliable when they occur in the direction of a smoothed trend (Heiken Ashi) and are supported by mid-range momentum (RSI), as this identifies the high-probability 'meat' of a trend move rather than the early-stage reversal or late-stage exhaustion.
Components
- Heiken Ashi (Standard MT5) (regime) — Defines the core trend regime to ensure entries are aligned with smoothed price action and to filter out minor pullbacks.
- Arrows Base Template (direction) — Acts as the logic engine that integrates the regime and confirmation filters to generate actionable signals.
- Williams Fractals (entry) — Provides the structural breakout point (the high/low of a 5-bar formation) required for an entry trigger.
- Average True Range (NNFX) (exit) — Determines the take-profit target based on current market volatility to adapt to changing range expansions.
- FractalScanner (risk) — Identifies the most recent swing high/low to be used as a hard stop-loss and to calculate position sizing relative to account risk.
- Relative Strength Index (RSI) (confirmation) — Confirms that momentum is moving in the direction of the breakout but is not yet in an overextended state.
Known failure conditions
- Prolonged sideways consolidation where price oscillates within a narrow range, repeatedly triggering lagging fractals.
- Significant slippage/spreads exceeding 20% of the ATR value, eroding the edge of structural breakouts.
