HVN-Ichimoku Institutional Breakout
Family: breakout · Regime: trending · Complexity: high · Asset classes: FX, Indices, Commodities · Timeframes: H1, H4
Thesis
Market participants exhibit inertia around high-volume nodes (HVN). A breakout from an HVN, when coinciding with an institutional Fair Value Gap and a momentum shift (fading Bears Power), identifies a transition from equilibrium to a new trending phase. By using Ichimoku for tactical timing and Momentum for exit, we capture the impulsive 'meat' of the move while price moves between volume nodes.
Components
- Volume by Level Map (regime) — Identifies High Volume Nodes (HVN) to define the 'value' regime; trades are only taken when price breaks out of high-density volume clusters.
- Bears Power (direction) — Used to measure the strength of the bearish impulse relative to the mean (EMA); specifically looking for 'divergence' or 'exhaustion' in bearish pressure during bull setups.
- Ichimoku Kinko Hyo (entry) — The Tenkan/Kijun cross provides the final tactical trigger, ensuring price action has sufficient trend momentum to sustain a breakout.
- Momentum (MOM) (exit) — Measures the velocity of the move; an exit is triggered when velocity slows, capturing the meat of the impulsive move before mean reversion.
- FakeCandle (risk) — Provides the visual 'true' price structure for stop-loss placement, filtering out wick-noise that often triggers premature exits in NNFX-style systems.
- OrderBlock FVG Detector (confirmation) — Confirms institutional interest by requiring a recent Fair Value Gap or Order Block to be present at the base of the move.
- TimeBlocks (Multifunctional Period Separator) (volatility_filter) — Filters for high-volatility windows and ensures the trade occurs when price is extended from the VWAP Balance.
Known failure conditions
- Price remains trapped within a High Volume Node (HVN) for more than 48 hours.
- Successive Order Blocks are formed in the opposite direction of the trade within 3 candles of entry.
- Volume by Level Map shows a perfectly uniform distribution (no distinct HVN/LVN nodes).
