MESA-Volume Pullback Convergence Strategy
Family: pullback · Regime: trending · Complexity: high · Asset classes: Equities, Forex, Crypto · Timeframes: H1, H4
Thesis
Market cycles persist even within strong trends; however, traditional oscillators often fail due to trend bias. By using Ehlers' Highpass filter to strip trend components from the cycle (MSTOCH) and only entering when volume-weighted momentum (200-SMA Gradient) confirms trend strength, we can identify high-probability mean-reversion entries in the direction of the dominant trend. The edge exists because the strategy ignores low-volume noise and enters only when price pressure (Bears Power) shows exhaustion within a broader high-interest move.
Components
- EMA with Switch-Based Length Reassignment (regime) — Establishes the primary trend regime; although the reassignment is currently dormant, it provides a stable baseline for price-action bias.
- Bears Power (direction) — Used to detect selling exhaustion during pullbacks (longs) or peak pressure (shorts) relative to the short-term EMA.
- Ehlers MESA Stochastic (MSTOCH) (entry) — Provides high-precision cyclical entry points by filtering out trend bias before stochastic calculation.
- Moving Averages (Multi-Method) (exit) — A lagging but smooth exit mechanism that captures the meat of the trend following a successful pivot.
- ATR SL Finder (risk) — Provides volatility-adjusted risk management based on current market breadth.
- Stochastic Oscillator (ta.stoch) (confirmation) — Acts as a fast-trigger confirmation to ensure the price momentum has actually begun to pivot.
- 200-Day Trend Background (Smoothed Volume Gradient) (volatility_filter) — Ensures that we only trade in high-volume trending environments, filtering out low-volatility noise that often traps cyclical oscillators.
Known failure conditions
- 200-day SMA slope remains within the neutral threshold for extended periods (flat market).
- MSTOCH remains pegged at 0 or 100 for more than 5 bars, indicating a runaway trend that invalidates the cycle model.
- ATR values drop to historic lows, making the stop-loss tighter than typical market noise/spread.
