MSLE Log-Volatility Pullback System
Family: trend_following · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: Equities, Forex, Crypto · Timeframes: H1, H4, D1
Thesis
Market participants often overreact to short-term counter-trend price movements, creating 'dips' in an otherwise healthy trend. By using a fast-reacting Stochastic (3) to enter when price stabilizes after a pullback (confirmed by pivot points) within a volatility-filtered regime (SuperTrend/BB), we capture the resumption of the primary trend. The MSLE provides a safety net by measuring if price movement is becoming 'unstructured' or too volatile relative to its recent log-average.
Components
- SuperTrend (regime) — Defines the macro trend regime; trades are only taken in the direction of the volatility-adjusted trend.
- Momentum (direction) — Filters for positive/negative raw price velocity to ensure the move has sufficient 'push' behind it.
- Stochastic Oscillator (Stoch) (entry) — Identifies short-term pullbacks (oversold in uptrend, overbought in downtrend) for high-probability entries.
- Money Flow Index (MFI) (exit) — Used to identify volume-weighted exhaustion points to exit before trend reversals.
- Mean Squared Logarithmic Error (MSLE) (risk) — Quantifies the stability of the price path; used to dynamically adjust stop loss based on logarithmic variance.
- Chart Point Qualifier Demo (confirmation) — Used as a structural confirmation to ensure the entry signal occurs near a recent price pivot (chart point).
- Bollinger Bands (volatility_filter) — Acts as a volatility filter; price must be outside the 'squeeze' and on the correct side of the midline.
Known failure conditions
- Extended period of SuperTrend flipping (choppy market) leading to multiple stop-outs.
- Stochastic (3) remains pinned at extremes during parabolic moves, preventing entry.
- MSLE values dropping to near-zero in low-volatility 'flatlines', resulting in unsustainably tight stop losses.
