RLS-Adaptive Volume Expansion Breakout
Family: breakout · Regime: trending · Complexity: high · Asset classes: Equities, Forex, Crypto · Timeframes: 1H, 4H, Daily
Thesis
Market momentum is most sustainable when price breaks out of a consolidation zone located outside of established 'fair value' (the Volume Profile POC). By using an RLS adaptive filter to confirm that the breakout is not noise and a Klinger Oscillator to confirm volume flow, we can isolate the transition from a ranging regime to a trending regime with higher accuracy than simple moving average crossovers.
Components
- Volume Profile + Pivot Levels [ChartPrime] (regime) — Used to establish the market regime. High-conviction trades occur when price breaks away from the high-volume Point of Control (POC), moving into low-volume 'voids'.
- Chandelier Exit (direction) — Acts as the primary directional filter, ensuring trades are only taken in the direction of the medium-term volatility-adjusted trend.
- Darvas Boxes Modern/Classic (entry) — Provides the execution trigger. Breakouts from the top or bottom of the 'box' signify the end of consolidation and the start of a momentum phase.
- HiLo_04 (Gann HiLo Activator) (exit) — A trend-following exit mechanism that tightens when the short-term trend reverses against the position.
- ATR Stop Loss Finder (risk) — Calculates the initial hard stop-loss based on current market volatility to normalize risk across different assets.
- Klinger Volume Oscillator (KVO) (confirmation) — Confirms that the breakout is supported by significant volume flow (money flow) rather than low-liquidity noise.
- Recursive Least Squares Adaptive Filter (RLS) (volatility_filter) — Filters out high-frequency noise. Entry is only permitted if the RLS slope aligns with the trade direction, preventing entries in stagnant markets.
Known failure conditions
- Price remains pinned to the Volume Profile POC for extended periods, causing RLS and KVO to flatten.
- Market volatility drops below the ATR Multiplier threshold, leading to extremely tight stops and frequent whipsaws.
- A series of 'Ghost Boxes' in the Darvas indicator indicating lack of structural price support.
