USDX Cycle Breakout Trader
Family: breakout · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: Forex (USD Majors) · Timeframes: M15, M30, H1
Thesis
Intraday currency trends are most reliable when aligned with the broad-market momentum of the US Dollar Index. By entering on a breakout of the previous day's high/low during high-volatility session windows, the strategy captures the 'liquidity run' that occurs when short-term traders are trapped by a macro-regime shift. The STC ensures we enter at the start of a cycle rather than at exhaustion.
Components
- USDX (US Dollar Index) Tracker (regime) — Acts as the global regime filter; trades are only taken in the direction of the US Dollar's broad trend as measured by the weighted basket.
- Schaff Trend Cycle (STC) (direction) — Provides the cyclical momentum confirmation to ensure we are not entering at the end of a short-term price swing.
- Daily High Low MTF (entry) — Identifies key structural liquidity levels; the breakout of the previous day's high or low acts as the primary entry trigger.
- MACD (exit) — Used to detect momentum exhaustion via signal line crosses to exit positions before a full reversal occurs.
- ATR SL Finder (risk) — Provides dynamic, volatility-adjusted stop loss levels to account for current market noise.
- Brackets Indicator (volatility_filter) — Ensures entry occurs during high-volatility session openings (London/NY) and filters out low-volume range-bound price action.
Known failure conditions
- USDX remains flat/sideways while individual pairs diverge (de-correlation of the USD basket).
- Successive stop-outs occurring within the 'Brackets' session window indicating a 'fake-out' regime.
- MACD signal line crosses occurring immediately after entry due to extreme volatility spikes.
