Weather-Filtered Squeeze Breakout (WFSB)
Family: trend_following · Regime: trending · Complexity: high · Asset classes: FX, Equities, Crypto · Timeframes: H1, H4, D1
Thesis
Markets transition from periods of 'quiet' consolidation to 'active' trends. By quantifying historical turbulence (Market Weather) to ensure the environment is not a permanent whipsaw, and using volatility bands to catch the moment of breakout (Squeeze), we can enter trends with high momentum (TSI) while using structural pivots (NNFX) to define risk. The edge lies in the exclusion of 'noisy' environments where standard trend-following fails.
Components
- Market Weather Price MA Cross (regime) — Filters out high-turbulence periods where price whipsaws across the SMA, ensuring the strategy only operates in 'clear weather' environments where trends are stable.
- Ichimoku Kinko Hyo (direction) — Establishes the primary trend direction; price must be on the correct side of the Kumo (Cloud) and Tenkan/Kijun must be aligned.
- Bollinger Squeeze Advanced (entry) — Identifies the transition from low-volatility compression to high-volatility expansion, providing the specific breakout trigger.
- Bollinger bands / Connectable [Azullian] (exit) — Provides a volatility-based mean reversion target to capture the 'meat' of the move before exhaustion.
- Supply & Demand Zones (NNFX) (risk) — Uses structural pivot zones to define hard stop-loss levels and calculate position sizing based on distance to structural failure.
- True Strength Index (TSI) with Signal Line (confirmation) — Filters the entry by requiring double-smoothed momentum to confirm the breakout direction and avoid 'head-fakes'.
Known failure conditions
- Market Weather consistently stays above the turbulence threshold, preventing any trades during high-volatility regimes.
- Price remains trapped within a narrow range between a Supply and Demand zone, causing the Squeeze to fire repeatedly without follow-through.
- The double-smoothed TSI creates too much lag, causing entries to occur at the apex of the move.
