Darvas-Grid Structural Momentum
Family: breakout · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: Equities, Forex, Indices · Timeframes: H1, H4
Thesis
Market participants often cluster orders around psychological round numbers and consolidation boundaries. By entering a breakout (Darvas) that aligns with mid-term structure (Flip Flop) and is validated by institutional volume (VA), we exploit the 'liquidity vacuum' between the consolidation zone and the next major psychological level (Round Levels), while the Grid Bot ensures we aren't chasing moves that have already reached statistical exhaustion.
Components
- Grid Bot [Grid range plugin] Two Moving Avarages [psyll] (regime) — Defines the volatility regime; signals are only valid when price is within the 'Grid Low' to 'Grid High' band, ensuring we aren't trading overextended exhaustion moves.
- Flip Flop Indicator (direction) — Determines the local trend bias by tracking market structure shifts (closing above the lowest bear bar high or below the highest bull bar low).
- Darvas Boxes MetaTrader 5 (entry) — Identifies the specific breakout point from a consolidation phase to trigger the entry.
- Round Levels Zone Shading (exit) — Sets targets at the nearest psychological round number levels, which act as natural liquidity magnets or reversal points.
- Equity Line Projection (risk) — Used to calculate the risk-per-trade by projecting the distance from entry to the Darvas Box floor/ceiling as a percentage of account equity.
- Volume Accumulation (VA) (confirmation) — Confirms the breakout has institutional backing by requiring the VA trend to align with the price breakout direction.
- Market Sessions (DarthBuddha) (volatility_filter) — Filters for high-liquidity periods (London/NY overlap) where Darvas breakouts are less likely to be false.
Known failure conditions
- VA remains flat or diverges during consecutive winning price moves, suggesting volume is no longer driving the trend.
- Breakout success rate drops below 30% during high-volatility sessions, indicating the Grid boundaries are too tight.
- Price consistently reverses at Round Levels before reaching the target, suggesting the 'Interval' is set too wide for current volatility.
