GARCH-RWI Structural Trend Hybrid
Family: hybrid · Regime: trending · Complexity: high · Asset classes: FX, Equities, Crypto · Timeframes: H1, H4, D1
Thesis
The strategy assumes that financial markets alternate between periods of 'random walk' and 'persistent trends' characterized by volatility clustering. By using the Random Walk Index to filter for non-randomness and the GARCH-based CV to adjust risk during high-volatility clusters, the strategy aims to enter trades only when the trend is statistically significant and the risk-reward is structurally supported by Ichimoku cloud positions. The edge exists because most traders ignore the statistical 'randomness' of price action and fail to scale risk based on the predictable clustering of volatility.
Components
- Minimal Fill Examples (regime) — Filters for the broad regime; long only when price is above the SMA20 (Green fill) to ensure alignment with immediate trend bias.
- Random Walk Index (RWI BTF) (direction) — Distinguishes between a trending market and a random walk. Requires RWI High/Low > 1.0 to confirm the move is statistically significant.
- MMT Ichi Workflow Overlay Profiles (entry) — Provides the structural trigger via Kumo Breakouts or Kijun Bounces, ensuring entries occur at points of established market structure shift.
- Commodity Channel Index (CCI) (exit) — Identifies momentum exhaustion; used to exit trades when the price deviates significantly from the mean and begins to revert.
- Conditional Volatility (CV) (risk) — GARCH-based volatility modeling allows for dynamic position sizing and stop-loss placement based on current volatility clustering.
Known failure conditions
- RWI values remain consistently below 1.0 for extended periods, indicating a permanent shift to mean-reverting noise.
- GARCH model fails to converge (Alpha + Beta >= 1), leading to erratic volatility estimates.
- High correlation between SMA-20 regime and Ichimoku signals leads to redundant filtering and late entries.
