HP-Filtered Institutional H&S Continuation
Family: hybrid · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: FX, Equities, Indices · Timeframes: H1, H4
Thesis
Market participants often view Head & Shoulders patterns as reversals; however, within a strong institutional trend (EMA > VWAP), these patterns often represent 'failed reversals' or 'complex re-accumulation.' By entering these structures only when the underlying cycle (HP Filter) and volume (VWAP) align, we exploit the liquidation of counter-trend traders who incorrectly anticipate a trend reversal.
Components
- Indicator Sample Logging Diagnostic (regime) — Used as a pre-flight execution check to ensure data integrity (rates_total consistency) and to log state transitions for debugging algorithmic latency.
- VWAP + EMA Cross Pullback (direction) — Establishes the institutional directional bias. Longs only when EMA is above VWAP, shorts when below, ensuring we trade in the direction of volume-weighted momentum.
- HS Indicator (Head & Shoulders) (entry) — Provides the specific entry trigger. We seek Inverse Head & Shoulders in bullish trends and standard Head & Shoulders in bearish trends as complex continuation/re-accumulation structures.
- SSL Channel (exit) — Acts as a secondary trend-following exit mechanism, closing the trade if price crosses the moving average of highs/lows, signaling a momentum shift.
- Chandelier Exit (risk) — Provides volatility-adjusted stop-loss levels and determines position sizing based on ATR-derived distance from price extremums.
- Hodrick-Prescott Filter (HP) (volatility_filter) — Filters out high-frequency cyclical noise; trades are only permitted if the underlying HP Trend component slope aligns with the VWAP/EMA direction.
Known failure conditions
- Persistent lack of H&S pattern formation during strong trending moves (opportunity cost).
- HP Filter slope consistently lags behind price action in high-volatility reversals, leading to late entries.
- SSL Channel exits price before the Chandelier Exit during minor pullbacks, cutting winners too early.
