Hybrid Vol-Vol Momentum Trader
Family: trend_following · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: Equities, Forex, Crypto · Timeframes: H1, H4, D1
Thesis
Market trends are most persistent when price momentum (MACD) is accompanied by a 'volatility expansion' (StDev) and high relative participation (Volume). By entering only when volume and volatility align with trend direction, we filter out weak 'noise' moves. The Williams Fractal provides a structural 'line in the sand' for risk, while the raw Momentum indicator allows the trade to run until the velocity of the move significantly dissipates.
Components
- Custom 006 Hybrid Table Scanner (regime) — Acts as the primary gatekeeper, ensuring trades are only taken when price trend and volume activity are synchronized.
- EMA Dynamic Selector Test (direction) — Provides a fast-reacting directional filter to ensure price is on the correct side of the micro-trend.
- MACD (entry) — Identifies momentum shifts via signal line crossovers within the established regime.
- Momentum (MOM) (exit) — Exits the trade once the raw velocity of the move slows down or reverses, aiming to capture the 'meat' of the move.
- Williams Fractals (risk) — Provides objective, market-structure based levels for stop losses and volatility-adjusted position sizing.
- Standard Deviation (volatility_filter) — Filters for 'volatility expansion' periods, preventing entries in quiet, range-bound markets.
Known failure conditions
- The strategy fails if the 80th percentile volatility threshold is reached frequently without subsequent price expansion (volatility without direction).
- The 2-bar lag in Williams Fractals leads to stop-outs before the SL can be physically placed on a fast-reversing candle.
