VIX-Curve MSLE Momentum Breakout
Family: trend_following · Regime: trending · Complexity: high · Asset classes: Equities, Indices (SPX/NDX) · Timeframes: H4, D1
Thesis
This strategy assumes that structural market regimes are dictated by the volatility term structure (VIX vs VIX3M). When the curve is in Contango, equity risk premia are generally positive and momentum is more reliable. By filtering these regimes with Mean Squared Logarithmic Error (MSLE), we avoid entering 'exhaustion' moves where the log-price has deviated too far from its mean, while the SilverTrend ensures we only enter on specific price-action breakouts.
Components
- VIX Curve Regime (Simple) (regime) — Filters trades based on the volatility term structure; ensures long entries occur during low-stress (Contango) and short entries during high-stress (Backwardation).
- TRIX (direction) — Provides a triple-smoothed momentum signal to confirm that the directional bias is statistically significant and not just noise.
- SilverTrend Sv2 (entry) — Triggers the actual entry signal based on price breaking through dynamic lookback levels.
- ZigZag Color (Classic) (exit) — Acts as a trailing exit/structural trend filter, closing positions when a significant counter-swing is confirmed.
- ATR Fib (risk) — Calculates the stop-loss level and position size based on session-relative volatility projections.
- Mean Squared Logarithmic Error (MSLE) (volatility_filter) — Prevents entering trades when price has deviated too far from its log-mean, avoiding late-stage chasing.
Known failure conditions
- Persistent VIX/VIX3M ratio of 1.0 (flat curve) leading to regime indecision.
- Failure of VIX data to lead price action in idiosyncratic (non-systemic) sell-offs.
- MSLE threshold being too tight, resulting in missing all high-momentum breakout moves.
