ZigZag Momentum Volatility Expansion Strategy
Family: volatility · Regime: trending · Complexity: medium · Asset classes: FX, Indices, Equities · Timeframes: H1, H4, D1
Thesis
The strategy's edge is predicated on the 'Volatility Breakout' hypothesis: markets exhibit serial correlation in direction after a period of volatility contraction. By requiring the breakout to align with the macro ZigZag structure and a positive Momentum reading, the strategy aims to filter 'fake' volatility spikes. Risk is mitigated by placing stops at Order Blocks—zones where significant institutional activity (ROC-based) was last detected—under the assumption that these levels will act as structural support/resistance.
Components
- ZigZag Color (Classic) (regime) — Defines the macro-structure by identifying the current confirmed swing direction (Bullish/Bearish).
- Momentum (Example) (direction) — Confirms that the rate of price change is accelerating in the direction of the macro-trend.
- PAM (Price Action Master) - Volatility Filter Version (entry) — Identifies periods of volatility compression (low ATR); the entry triggers on the expansion following this compression.
- HiLo Activator 02 (exit) — Provides a dynamic trailing stop and exit signal based on the SMA of highs and lows.
- Sonarlab - Order Blocks (risk) — Uses high-momentum zones (Order Blocks) to define structural stop-loss levels and risk parameters.
Known failure conditions
- Successive volatility spikes (ATR > Value_B) that fail to generate directional follow-through (whipsaws).
- Markets where the ZigZag last leg frequently flips direction due to noise, indicating no clear macro-trend.
- The static ATR threshold (Value_B) being significantly higher or lower than the 50-day average ATR of the asset.
